I had to re-install ubuntu recently and decided to install Feisty Beta. My printer did not work automatically.
I followed the instructions to download the firmware (getweb 1020) and to change the downloaded .img file into a .dl file (sudo arm2hpdl sihp1020.img > sihp1020.dl). I copied this firmware file into /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/ Only then did my printer print out a test page. Did I understand correctly that this problem will only be fixed in Feisty +1? In that case, I think it would be important to write a descent how to somewhere to install the printer. I think this printer is very popular because it is cheap.
