I suspect this is a problem with the layout manager. We've seen this before, when it's adding images to the checkerboard and the window is sized a particular size, this can happen.
If you could do the following, that would help us. From the console type: $ gconf-editor Find /apps/shotwell/preferences/window in the left-hand sidebar. Note these values: library_height, library_width, library_maximize, and pane_position. When you respond, let us know what these values are. Then run Shotwell and resize the main window. It may be only need to be a little bit. If the window is maximized, try unmaximizing it. Then attach your camera and attempt importing.
