Andy, I never saw a fix for this issue in karmic. In maverick, the vesa
driver itself detects the presence of KMS and refuses to run, printing a
message to the X log:
(EE) VESA: Kernel modesetting driver in use, refusing to load
That seems to imply that if the vesa driver *did* load, it could still
hork the KMS system. But maybe this is the correct fix all the same?
