Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

when trying to burn a disc, the burner prog's can't find optical drive.
Reports HAL is missing/not running. This is a new error. Disc doesn't
appear in places, but when you insert a disc, the autoplay dialog
appears, and the disc(a video DVD) is played with no problems.

Purging hal gives the following error while running: "Could not find
'/var/run/hald': No such file or directory" This leads me to believe
that this is the missing file. It is not placed there even after
reinstalling hal.
