Agreed that the icon needs to be discoverable again. This also raises
the question of how often the icon notifies you that it needs attention.
As an example, if I pinged on X-Chat while I am using my computer, I see
the icon poke out of the side of the left part of the screen and then
disappear back out - if I notice this I can go to the app to see who has
pinged me. If I am away from my computer and this happens, I don't know
that I need to respond to the app.

I had a few possible thoughts on this:

 * The icon could repeatedly pop out and then hide again to indicate that it
needs attention. This would serve well in giving visibility to the app that
needs me to interact with it.
 * Another option could be that if an app needs attention, part of the Launcher
background shows on the left side of the screen and 1/3 - 1/2 of the icon
displays (possibly throbbing) to indicate attention. I have used my paltry GIMP
skills to mock up the kind of thing I am suggesting and attached it to this bug
report. This might not be the best solution, but it might a starting point for
further discussion.
