At last, here is a sequence of commands which reproduce the issue with
grub-mkrescue.  I created the rescue image from lucid, and used it to
try to boot from a lucid hd:

loadfont (hd0,1)/usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2
set gfxmode=640x480
insmod gfxterm
insmod vbe
insmod terminal
terminal_output gfxterm
   ^  Here I get the 'error: no suitable mode found' message
insmod gettext
linux (hd0,1)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1
  ^ here I get the 'unaligned pointer: 0x8ebf0002\nAborted.  Press any key to 
continue." message
