i have the same problem, Ubuntu Studio 10.10 32bit, running Audacity 1.3.12 with an Audio Technica USB mic, and onboard intel soundcard in a dell 1525 laptop.
I am trying to playback while recording, and have overdub checked in the preferences. Adjusting the latency into the thousands, and the according minus adjustment sometimes leaving a 10ms gap between them can enable me to overdub a track, before the error returns, or it freezes, or is choppy in it's playback. Now I can't even record the primary track.
