I followed the instructions for strace, and was able to reproduce the problem while strace was running.
The log file it created, though was 31.2 MB in size, though. While it was running, it was streaming output at the command line at an incredibly fast rate. In any case, while strace was running, I deleted a series of files on the remote machine until the problem occurred. Then I had to reboot to get Nautilus to run again.
