Bob, gThumb generates thumbnails correctly, Nautilus does not. Nautilus ignores the exif orientation tag when generating thumbnails.
gThumb uses Nautilus-generated thumbnails if they are present. If gThumb was the first program to generate the thumbnail, it will be correct. If Nautilus generated the thumbnail, it may be wrong. Try to avoid using Nautilus when viewing new photos.
