Public bug reported:
I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on a ThinkPad T510 with a Core i7
processor and i915 graphics. I'm using the Natty kernel backport, so
this bug most likely affects Natty as well. I did not experience this
bug with the 2.6.32 or 2.6.36 series kernels. My external monitor is a
recent Dell model running at 1920x1200 @ 60Hz over DisplayPort.
This bug manifests itself as both displays going blank, my laptop screen
(but not the DisplayPort screen) coming back, and then (a couple seconds
later) a kernel panic. Usually, I don't see the panic display on either
screen, but I was lucky enough to capture it once in the attached image.
When I force off the system and start it back up, the BIOS screen shows
but stays frozen. After a *second* force power off and start, the system
boots normally.
