Could you try with gnome-alsamixer please. This for the gnome desktop, e.g. Ubuntu
Open a terminal and install with 'sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer' Then to run 'gnone-alsamixer' When Gnome ALSA Mixer window appears go to Edit>Sound Card Properties and check that the appropriate functions are checked. e.g. mic. Close and return to Gnome ALSA Mixer and check that your function isn't muted. Apply two thirds volume.
