Yes, this works.

I really had edited the line for /dev/hda by hand, because I formatted 
the partition with a new fs and the old UUID did not work any more.

I do not know whether, by throwing away the UUID, I did anything "evil" 
in the sense of Ubuntu, anything I should not do.

If so, maybe a big warning in the /etc/fstab would be in order, because 
I think that many people like me are have been editing their /etc/fstab 
by hand since years and do not know what this UUID stuff is about, so 
they just throw it away.
