I've tried recreating this bug with Maverick and was unable to given the
information you've provided. Please upgrade and test. Does LibreOffice
Calc work for you?
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa && sudo apt-get update &&
sudo apt-get -y upgrade && sudo apt-get -y install libreoffice-calc
