Thanks for taking an interest. You're talking to a senile, moronic nube
who despite trying for at least 6 months can't get his speaker working.
I know that the fault is software related because if I do a fresh
re-install of the operating system I sometimes get a few moments sound
from the speakers - which then disappears permanently. Output of lspci is:

It's an Asus Eee 1000 (i.e. the Linux version)
Thus the graphics controller is Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME
I've tried Pulseaudio, removing Pulseaudio, Alsa, removing Alsa, OSS4
all to no avail.
Any suggestions welcome, but I suspect I've already tried them.
I had the same audio problems with my Thinkpad R40e - intermittent sound.
The Asus netbook has a Fn-F10 mute and Fn-F11 unmute but messing with
those doesn't help.
I will buy a new laptop when I can get it with an ARM Cortex A9 processor.
Cheers,
Paul
