Can you try this please:-
Make sure you have a working microphone/headphones plugged into the appropriate 
sockets 

In a terminal:-

sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer
gnome-alsamixer

Go to the Edit menu and select Sound Card Properties.
Check all the Sound Card Element Names and Close.
In the GNOME ALSA Mixer window make sure your microphone and headphones are not 
muted and has, say, half volume.

Now go to Sound Preferences (left click the speaker icon on the top panel or 
System>Preferences>Sound)
Under the Hardware tab check that profile is Analog Stereo Duplex, Input tab 
set to have a microphone showing as a connector and the Output tab connector 
set to Analog Headphones.
