This is unreproducible in Ubuntu 10.10 LibreOffice Calc at the Terminal:
localc -nologo
Click File -> Save As -> drop-down File name: example -> copy the word
example -> drop-down File type: ODF Spreadsheet (.ods) -> Save button ->
copied example in A1 no noticable slowdown occurred.
