Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. The lirc building system is pretty confusing. Generally, on a
clean install, the following should work:
sudo apt-get install module-assistant linux-libc-dev linux-headers-$(uname
-r) lirc-modules-source
sudo m-a -v -t prepare
sudo m-a -v -t -f build lirc-modules
sudo m-a -v -t install lirc-modules

Installing Lirc support should be simpler
