It also happens with unity 3.4.6-0ubuntu1.
I can reproduce this with other letters than 'app'. In my case, to
reproduce:
1. Open dash
2. Type a character
3. Wait a second
4. Type another character
5. Wait another second
6. Delete the last typed character (press backspace)
7. Repeat from 4 some times until the crash happens
