You are right. This commit does not bring fully support to rs232 modems. The commit just brings the possiblity for modemmanager to detect rs232 modems connected to platform devices. Personally i use this for an embedded system with modemmanager. You are also right that some modems need initialization strings, ... but in my case, the modem worked on my pc but not on the embedded platform so i needed this patch.
