**** Work around **** In order to recover the missing menu entries it seems that you have to mount the missing drive, so that you can access the files. I did this via Dolphin (Nautilus in Ubuntu). Once this partition is mounted I ran sudo update-grub in Konsole (terminal) and the menu entry was then generated.
