Found the problem - previous version of Evolution handled all settings in the main window settings dialouge. For some reason those settings does not take effect in the new/ reply mail window. Needed to do the SSL settings there as well.
I would still classify this as a bug since the new behaviour is rather illogical and differs from previous versions.
