Binary package hint: nautilus
Hi,
First, I am not sure whether this affects nautilus as I couldn't figure
it out the specific package, but I think it is a bug.
Steps to reproduce it:
1) I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on my laptop.
2) I, then, installed Kubuntu 10.10 x64 in my laptop too, by diminishing
the size of the initial Ubuntu partition.
3) By starting session in Ubuntu I made a sudo chmod 0700
/home/"username" to protect its home folder; And I then did the same
with the home user folder of Kubuntu (by starting the respective session
within Kubuntu).
4) Quite curiously and despite the above, I still can see the contents
of the user folder of Kubuntu within Ubuntu, and vice versa!
5) Further (within Ubuntu), by right-clicking on the Kubuntu user folder
to see its properties, it shows that the owner is... The Ubuntu user
and, also vice versa, within Kubuntu and seeing the properties of the
Ubuntu user folder, one can read that the owner of such folder is the
same Kubuntu user (!?); That's to say, the same user folder seems to
have a different owner depending on the OS from which you see it.
6) More relating info: In Ubuntu I have 2 users (one with administrative
privileges and another one without access to sudo, which I do use
normally, as an added layer of safety (except when
installing/uninstalling or for updating the system); It's by logging in
as the Ubuntu user with not access to sudo (and to which I made the
chmod 0700) from which I can see the contents of the Kubuntu user
folder; From Kubuntu I can see the contents of the 2 users folders I
have in Ubuntu, the one with chmod 0700 and the one with not.
7) As expected, by logging into the Ubuntu user which has the
possibility to access sudo, I cannot see the contents of the another
non-administrative Ubuntu user (and to which I made the chmod 0700), nor
the contents of the Kubuntu user... But, because the owner of such
Kubuntu home folder "is" the same user as the non-administrative Ubuntu
user.
In a nutshell, within the same Ubuntu I cannot see the contents of the
user home folder to which I made the sudo chmod 0700 (as normally) but,
I still can see it if I try from the another Linux OS I also have
installed.
Perhaps I am wrong, but I think it's not normal that one can see the
folder contents of another Linux OS filesystem from a normal Linux user
account (not by logging in as root, nor from a gksudo nautilus window)
if one made chmod 0700 to the folder that one tries to see its contents.
