Last night/this morning (two different computers, both on wired network, both with NM reporting no connection when there was one):
Did a sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade. Received (among other things) network-manager (0.6.4-6ubuntu7) feisty. Restarted the machines. NM properly reports "wired network" now.
