These printers are very old, so I will not do any downstream patches on
the HPLIP Ubuntu package, also the original poster is not sure whether
his printer hardware is perhaps broken. Therefore I close the task for
the Ubuntu package.
Upstream developers at HP, the problem in HPLIP is described in comment
#6.
