i've found this into xsession-errors:
(gnome-panel:2886): EggSMClient-CRITICAL **: egg_sm_client_set_mode: assertion

failed
Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
First my config: maverick i386 & natty i386 sharing the same /home
What i've done: daily updates on maverick and adding some missing
applets (trash bin, clock) into the gnome-panel taskbar. Rebooting into
natty, my previous well configurated gnome-panel now have two clocks &
two trash-bin: those added into maverick !!! One other disconfigurated
applet is the sensors temperatures: natty was only displaying some of
them (cores temp not displayed) into initial config, but after the
maverick tweaks, those natty sensors temp are all displayed.
So the custom settings of one distro might not conflict/modify/override
settings on an other distro: settings need to be distro signed.
