I tried the steps in comment #2 again on a freshly installed Ubuntu 10.10 with the latest updates. I get almost the same result, except that in the second to last step (back with Totem) the pop-up dialog says "An error occurred Location not found." The final result is the same: Totem does not play the DVD.
