Can you attach the following files: /etc/cups/cupsd.conf /etc/cups/printers.conf
Can you also boot a Natty Live CD, mount your hard disk from within the live session, stop the CUPS daemon, copy the complete /etc/cups/ directory (with subdirectories) into /etc/cups of the system, and start the CUPS daemon again, and then do your last tests again. Does CUPS still crash?
