As per the forum thread, I've reported the bug upstream and been asked
to work through a git bisect to locate the commits between 2.6.37 final
release and 2.6.38rc1 that first caused the problem. This is in progress
and I expect to complete on 18th March.

In doing this testing I'm noticing that  this issue may be linked to
lsusb hanging. I've observed that on "bad" kernels, lsusb hangs while
this device is plugged and then completes when the device cable is
removed. On "good" kernels, lsusb reports the device correctly.
