Hello Jonathan Riddell, I did a bug report on VLC (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/737192) about KIO SLAVES support like you suggested ... I'll also do a bug report to Gnome Mplayer and LibreOffice about this problem...
