Just tried mainline kernel 2.6.35.11; same problem, so I'm back on .32-26 again :-( Something I might not have explained earlier; when I select any 35-X kernel version in Grub I get a blank screen with the cursor in the upper left corner, pretty normal so far, but that's it. There's no harddisk activity at all and I must use the powerbutton to restart (ctrl-alt-del doesn't work).
