I confirm anonym's problems. I have an Acer aspire 1692WLmi, Pentium M740 with ATI X700 graphics. With the proprietary fglrx driver (version 8.25.18), hardware 3D is unavailable with -686 kernel (version 2.6.15-26.46) but works with -386 kernel. This can be verified by running glxinfo and checking the "direct rendering:" line.
