The 'trigger(s)' for and manner of seem to vary depending on the launcher mode in use, can't 100% say do this or that and this will happen Though sooner or later in a session something will go south. Be it the launcher won't hide, goes dim when it shouldn't, apps start opening under it when in mode 0, a right click on launcher icon produces a desktop context menu, ect. ect.
