Have you tried using the alternative installation cd?

** Description changed:

- The laptop will run windows FreeBSD. When booting from the CD, the display
goes to violet background and the system seems to freeze. After searching for
a solution, I tried again. Actually, several times. At boot time, I hold
shift until I get the language selection. I select English. The next screen I
press f6 and select nomodeset. I have also tried adding nomodeset after
splash. I select Install Ubuntu and the CD is accessed for several minutes.
Sometimes, I can ctrl-alt-f1 and get a console, but, access is VERY slow. I
downloaded the iso image again and made a 2nd CD. Same result.
