Celian/Magnus - As mentioned in my note above on 31 December 2010, I uninstalled Pulse Audio and use only Alsa, and now everything works. It isn't ideal, since I forfeit using PUlse Audio, but now the microphone works and that is a plus. To control volume settings I use the Alsa mixer. Paul
