There was something funny about my extended partition and its extended
partition table. I used fdisk to delete all logical partitions, and the
extended one. Then I recreated the partitions, making sure the cylinder
start/end points were like before (except the swap partition: made it
one cylinder smaller since it seemed to force the creation of the next
partition away from the original start point). And everything was fine
afterwards.
