Yep, looks like it is fixed for pressing F10. This still happens if you scrub the mouse over to the application menu after clicking another menu. And yes, I'm not sure how but I managed to focus Unity itself. It is much trickier with 3.6.8.
I guess that other issue being fixed makes this a bit of a non-issue, but is it not possible to fix this at its source? (I'm assuming the source is indicator-appmenu or Unity's connection to it).
