The workaround from #9 did indeed work for me also. I added it in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/99-NetworkManager_actions script so that it runs when the interface comes up. However, maybe this isn't the best place to invoke iwconfig because I find that the wireless association process still takes a LOT longer than the b43 driver on the same hardware. The STA driver takes ~10seconds and the b43 driver ~1second.
