@~suv. It seems that this only happens with the Unity desktop manager.
Using the classic Gnome desktop:
* Tooltip paths show correctly in "File->Open Recent"
* Files open correctly from "File->Open Recent" in Inkscape
* Files open correctly from "Places->Recently Used"
Using Unity:
* No tooltips appear in "File->Open Recent" in Inkscape
* Same file opens, regardless of option chosen from "File->Open Recent" in
Inkscape
* "Places->Recently Used" has been replaced by the Unity Places app. Files
open correctly, however
