Well, B43 is now working for me again -- I have no explanation as to why
it wasn't working before -- just thought I'd give it one more try.

I know many prefer the STA driver, but something is better than nothing
-- and in my case have a history of kernel panics using STA on this
hardware.

I just removed the STA driver using the "Additional Drivers" gui, then
did sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer.  That was that...
