Well then the only way I can explain it is that those disks were used
previously in another raid.  Most likely a hardware raid controller,
which usually uses the ddf1 format.

You can remove the ddf1 signature by running sudo dmraid -E
/dev/sd[cdefgh]

That should resolve the issue.
