Serge I cannot reproduce this either.
The character looks garbled if I change the terminal character set to non-UTF8, 
but it is written correctly to the file.

Is the file you redirect to on a partition mounted with non-UTF
character encoding? If you don't redirect you get the right ouput on the
screen?
