** Description changed:

  Since at least 2011-03-20 panel icons are no longer monochrome, the
  reason for that is that SVG images are not recognized.
  
  Trying to open them in eog also gives an error, e.g.:
  
  $ eog /usr/share/pixmaps/gwibber.svg
  
  An infobar is displayed at the top with text:
  
  Could not load image 'gwibber.svg'.
  Unrecognized image file format
