Hi,

I installed gdm and fvwm (which caused the pam-session line which you
commented out to be added - I didn't have that before), then installed
libcap2-bin, and got the message about running pam-auth-update. So I
ran pam-auth-update --force, accepted the defaults. Then logged in as a
normal user and ran password, with no problems.

So I suspect something else went wrong - a conflict with another
package, or you didn't pick all the default on pam-auth-update - causing
passwd to not work. I'm glad you got it working again. I'm going to
mark this invalid as I don't think there is anything for us to do.
("Fix Released" doesn't seem right as the package wasn't changed).
Please let me know if you disagree with that.

Thanks again for reporting the bug, and I'll keep my eye out for this
happening to anyone else.

** Changed in: libcap2 (Ubuntu)
       Status: Incomplete => Invalid
