At the time I was using lucid, modprobe was not fixing the problem because the hardware was not recognized by the driver (pci id's not listed). Once id's are listed, first modprobe causes a if to be created by udev scripts. This i/f is used by subsequent reboots. I can no longer test lucid on this hardware.
