Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

It seems that after a long day of working, while always keeping at least
one terminal open, I end up getting TTYs with names like /dev/pts/84. It
seems gnome-terminal leaves some dangling file descriptors. This is
probably due to the fact that gnome-terminal leaves a file descriptor to
the TTY device itself; something it should not do at all. This causes
gnome-terminal to miss the EOF on the ptmx, which is probably the reason
why it isn't garbage collected.

This can easily be reproduced on 10.10, by opening and closing a lot of
windows, while leaving at least one window open to prevent gnome-
terminal from shutting down completely. This bug doesn't seem present on
10.04.

I've attached the output of lsof.
