If that happens, can you please do

  pidof NetworkManager
  pidof nm-applet

? One should print out a number, the other shouldn't. The latter is the
one that crashed.

If nm-applet crashed, can you please do this on the command line:

  nm-applet --sm-disable

then repeat the steps which produce the crash. This should crash this
running nm-applet on the console as well and produce some screen output.
Please copy&paste it here.

If NetworkManager itself crashes, does

  sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager restart

make the icon appear again?
