Ok, actually there's tons of info and screenshots and such in the
upstream bug and its dupes.  I posted a workaround to the description;
it's pinpointed to a particular commit as well for patch reverting joy.

For now I'm going to let the bug sit as is; it seems upstream is well
aware of the problem it's just on the back burner for now.  The issue is
a cosmetic one (as opposed to X crashes and lockups) and sounds like
it's only going to be visible after a user has installed wine, so that
all lessens the severity quite a bit.  Hopefully the workaround I posted
will be suitable for most people; if not lemme know and if I have time I
can gin up a ppa with that patch reverted.
