You are right.
The icon is stuck on the screen.
In most cases the icon returns to its positions if I click on the empty space.

But in some cases, the buttons seems to be totally (not frozen) but
hollow and transparent.  All mouse-clicks pass through to the window
beneath. However the desktop and its windows and all keystrokes work
fine and normally.

See the attached picture. I have marked the text by dragging along the
icons, like the buttons weren't there.

BTW: When I grab and move a button/icon rather quickly up & down, the
harddrive is spinning heavily and CPU usage for compiz pops up to 25%
(ref: top). Harddrive keeps spinning a few seconds after the icon has
landed. But this is not a real life problem.
