I found another cause for this behavior.

None of the available fixes worked for me, so I did a clean install of beta 1 
and everything was working fine.
I then started moving back my old configuration step-by-step. As soon as I 
reached my custom .Xmodmap the issue started to re-appear. There were also some 
errors regarding .Xmodmap in .xsession-errors, but I am not sure whether that 
had anything to do with the weird behavior. Removing the .Xmodmap fixed the 
error on two different machines, though I have no idea why. :-)

tl;dr: If no other fixes work for you, try removing your .Xmodmap.
