I think this is rather a problem/issue with dpkg!?
Confirming:
$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/phpize
dpkg: /usr/bin/phpize not found.
Full path works:
$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/phpize5
php5-dev: /usr/bin/phpize5
Partial path without leading slash works:
$ dpkg -S usr/bin/phpize
php5-dev: /usr/bin/phpize5
Installed packackes here:
dpkg 1.13.24ubuntu6
php5-dev 5.2.1-0ubuntu1
